Lance 2007 East River Deer

Dakota Hotspots - Nov. 21, 2007

I hope everybody's Fall is going well. I thought I’d update you on how my East River Deer season is going. This little guy made the mistake of stopping and giving a second look in one of our pastures yesterday. The first shot rang out at 8 a.m. He was 300 yards away and behind a group of cedar trees, but there was a small opening to thread a bullet through. I hit him hard but he didn’t respond like I thought he would, I didn’t even hear the beautiful sound, kapuck. It turned out that I hit him in the top of the heart and he did a death run (at about 40mph) but I put a second one in him at about 350 for insurance. The first shot was a clean pass through. I had to give him a three foot lead and hold 10 inches high on the second one and that stopped him, since he was quartering away and the bullet went into his far shoulder. Both shots were within 2 inches of each other. I was using a 243 with Hornandy Magunum 100 grain BTSP’s. There wasn’t much left of his vitals. He unofficially gross scores 153, that’s my scoring. His left side is kind of weak, but he has a lot of character. His main beams are over 20 inches, an 18 inch spread and 5 inch bases. I bet he weighed over 275 pounds. He is a 6x6. I had no idea how big he was other than he was fairly tall when I decided to shoot; I knew was going to bolt in a moment and I didn’t even have time to look at his rack. It was all over within 8 seconds and then he tumbled into a ravine. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked up to him. He would have been scary next year! I have a few doe tags to fill, but I’ll spend most of my time bow hunting from now on. It’s time to get serious. Hopefully more pictures will follow this soon. Good luck in your adventures, Lance Pankratz
